Opesusi Oluwafemi, the father of 19-year-old Faith Opesusi Timileyin, who committed suicide after receiving a low score in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, has revealed that she died after ingesting rat poison.
According to Oluwafemi, his daughter took the decision to end her life after discovering she scored just 146 in the examination, a sharp decline from her high score in the previous year.
He added that the deceased student aspired to study Microbiology at the university.
“My daughter scored very high in last year’s Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB result. This year, they gave her 146 and that was what made her drink rat poison,” he said.
“She was devastated and disappointed when she saw her results.”
Oluwafemi lamented that Faith did not share her emotional distress with anyone in the family.
“If she had opened up, we would have consoled her and told her that there is still hope,” he added.
Faith’s death comes amid outrage over discrepancies in this year’s UTME results.
On Wednesday, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, publicly admitted to errors in the processing of the 2025 UTME results.
He apologised to affected candidates and disclosed that at least 379,997 candidates were impacted by technical irregularities that occurred in 157 of the 882 examination centres across the country.
