The Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan in Southern Kaduna has announced the release of Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Asuwaye, who was abducted by kidnappers in February 2026.
In a statement issued on May 12, 2026, by the diocesan chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Jacob Shanet, the Church confirmed that the priest regained his freedom after spending three months in captivity.
Fr. Asuwaye was kidnapped on February 7, 2026, at his residence by armed attackers suspected to be terrorists, an incident that sparked widespread concern among members of the Catholic community and residents of Southern Kaduna.
He was reportedly abducted alongside 10 parishioners from Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Karku, Kauru Local Government Area on the same day. The attackers reportedly killed three people during the assault.
According to the statement, the priest is now safe, receiving medical attention, and in stable condition.
“With profound gratitude to God and all who supported us, we announce the release of Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Asuwaye from captivity after three months,” the statement read.
The Diocese expressed appreciation to Christians, religious leaders, and people of goodwill who offered prayers and support throughout the period of his captivity.
Following the abduction, the Diocese organised special prayer sessions and May devotions dedicated to his safe return.
It said the sustained prayers of the faithful helped strengthen the family and the wider Christian community during the difficult period.
Bishop Julius Yakubu Kundi of the Kafanchan Diocese also thanked members of the public for their solidarity, describing the support received as overwhelming and encouraging.
The Diocese urged residents to remain united, vigilant, and prayerful amid ongoing security challenges affecting parts of Kaduna State and other regions of Nigeria.
Kidnappings involving clergy members and other residents remain a major security concern in parts of northern Nigeria, with religious leaders increasingly targeted by criminal groups.
